9/29 - Drink Up Buttercup w/ And The Moneynotes
“Lumbering drums, jangling shakers, electronic squiggles, and lots of whimsical, ragged shouts accompany the strutting bass line and stomping guitar. As with, say, Chicago indie-rockers the M’s, it’s all just loose and playful enough to avoid coming across as overly nostalgic.” - Pitchfork
Tuesday, 9/29: Drink Up Buttercup + And The Moneynotes
9:30pm / $5 / 21+

9/22! ROCK PLAZA CENTRAL w/ The Ends of the Earth
Toronto’s Rock Plaza Central have been a band in some form for more than a decade, but they became indie world darlings when their unknown, self-released album Are We Not Horses? received the elusive Best New Music tag from Pitchfork. That album was confusing to some because, at its core, it’s a concept album about mechanical horses who think they’re alive and real. However, it was very hard to ignore for many because of its epic alt-country switching triumphant instrumentation and darkly woven tales. Now three years removed from that record, they return with ...At the Moment of Our Most Needing, or If Only They Could Turn Around They’d Know They Weren’t Alone, the band’s fourth official album.
This Tuesday! 9/22/09 - w/ The Ends of the Earth
10pm / $6
Thursday, September 17, 2009
SATURDAY! 9/19!! CHARLES HAVIRA w/ DONOVAN ROBERTS!!
Havira has a quirky tenor that, oddly enough, sounds like Viggo Mortensen as hepcat killer, delivering lines like, “Check your machine for signs of life/go on and tell yourself you can make it through these heartaches I know all too well/let me show you a new way through happiness.”
Donovan Roberts give their acoustic blues more life than most such projects, avoiding by-the-numbers traditionalism while maintaining deep blues feeling. Are You Alone (Shelloy Sounds) crackles with energy even on such
oft-recorded songs as “Big Road Blues,” displays inventiveness in a country blues arrangement of Percy Mayfield’s “River’s Invitation,” and enriches the canon with Jeff Roberts’ lovely, jazzy “Wonderin’ About You.” Roberts’
guitar is augmented by occasional piano, harmonica, and mandolin, and Lori Donovan’s smooth, sultry vocals are simply perfect. Bold moves like the bossa nova “What You Need From Me” and a reworking of Tom Petty’s “You Got
Lucky” pay off neatly without interrupting the mood.

THE HOWLIES TONIGHT! 8/26 w/ surprise guests AND THE MONEYNOTES
"HOWLIES are the first Rock 'n' Roll band of the 21st Century. Their debut album TRIPPIN' WITH HOWLIES is right up there with the earliest albums of the Ramones, The Sex pistols & The Trashmen. Howlies are fine actors, too. Imagine an unholy blending of the 3 Stooges and Betty Page. Their live show is: unexpected. Conjure up musical thugs/male cheerleaders running amok in a madhouse rubber room.
TRIPPIN' WITH HOWLIES was recorded in 42 hours at Lo-Fi Studios at the edge of the California desert in Babylon, USA. Maria Baglien engineered, Maria and Howlies mixed, Kim Fowley produced (and I helped on some of the mixes, too). I used my memories of producing adventures with Gene Vincent, Modern Lovers, The Seeds, Blue Cheer and The Runaways to get the noize right. TRIPPIN' WITH HOWLIES is a vinyl-inspired analogue raid on the ProTools present. The end result is: Nightmare Fun in the House of Pleasure.
Come on down to the American Southeast and join 'J.R.', 'Stingray', 'Brango' and '4-C' as they party with the Forces of Evil... in that Forbidden Planet of Inner Space. The Casanovas of Cabbagetown will blow your mind and change your life!
Rock on, people! The change has finally come."
--Kim Fowley

"Cody sings like a cagey fighter punches; he holds back, waits for his moment, and then explodes." -No Depression
"It's Cody's workmanlike guitar playing, soaring harmonies
and twang-tinged voice that carry the day.
When he sings on City of Destruction
that he's gonna build himself a future,
it seems a sure bet he's right"-Performing Songwriter
